The Russian name for the nesting doll is matryoshka. The word matryoshka, can also be used for a family matriarch. The first recorded set was made by a Russian monk on Honshu Island, Japan, for children to play with. Many sets are still made for this purpose; however, many dolls are also being painted by some of the finest artists in Russia and have become highly collectible. Most nesting dolls are made of Linden wood and are turned on a lathe. Lathe work requires a high degree of skill. Because of the hand painting and the wood craftsmanship, all nesting dolls are not created equally. We pick out the best, so all of our sets fit well and are well painted. Peruse our dolls and see the quality which sets us apart.
